Uts Central

Product details

UTS Central is a vibrant student hub and faculty space at the heart of UTS’ city campus. It's home to the new UTS Library and scholarly Reading Room, a wealth of student study spaces, and an inviting, publicly accessible food court that opens onto Alumni Green.

UTS Central is the winner of the council’s Interior Design Award for 2021 and received an Award of Excellence in the category of Best Tall Building under 100 metres. The Interior Design Award recognises tall building projects that have integrated extraordinary spaces within, which enhance the experience of those using the space and take the solutions and possibilities for interior space design to the “next level”.

At UTS Central, with its glass-wrapped podium and twisting tower, architecture studio FJMT both dances with the University of Technology Sydney’s existing structures and defines the future using new design and construction techniques that facilitate individual and collaborative study.

The design is notable for its elegant, curved lines, which provide a complementary contrast to the modular, utilitarian design of the Brutalist UTS Tower. The upper levels have been designed with a distinctive ‘twist’. The building design means that no two-floor plans are the same.

The project’s Design Director, Richard Francis-Jones, says university spaces should inspire us, encourage us to be our best, and lift spirits and aspirations. “Interiors that reflect organic order increase our sense of comfort and wellbeing – we don’t all like living in boxes. UTS Central explores that at every level – how you move through the building, how the form of the building is determined and responds to the city and the campus, right down to the interior detailing,” he says.

While building exteriors make a striking design statement, the interior spaces are just as unique. The design of the UTS Reading Room was inspired by traditional scholarly spaces where academics can engage with current research, exchange ideas and immerse themselves in study. With a triple-height atrium opening to a large skylight and an uninterrupted glass façade looking over Alumni Green, this is a light-filled space for quiet work, reading and contemplation.
