For what is fundamentally a minimising of detail and breaking down of matter into it's basic visual components, annunciating "The Digit Collection from nanimarquina and Cristian Zuzunaga", is one hell of a mouthful!
Spanish by birth but now based permanently in London (after completing his studies at The Royal College of Art), Zuzunaga comes to textiles and flooring from a background in graphic and communication design.
Vibrancy is key in his designs and the intricacy and science behind the patterning is quite inspired, himself citing the works as oddly embodying "randomness and repetition" - all at once. Drawing the patterns from extremely "zoomed-in" images of cityscapes, Zuzunaga extracts the primary geometric shapes and unique colour combinations that make up our cities and urban environments. An intriguing exploration into the interrelation of pattern, shape and colour and their omnipresence within our broader built surroundings.
Zuzunaga's client base is a varied as his pattern work, fielding commissions from The Tate Gallery, Wallpaper* Magazine, Ligne Roset, Moroso (see the Patricia Urquiola designed "Springfield Sofa" above), upholstered in a special edition of Kvadrat's "Pixellated" collection.
